I know this is the second movie in recent days that I have posted but I thought that this was totally fascinating.
This English man has a memory lasting only 30 seconds. The only two things he can remember is his wife and how to play piano. Everything from the flavors attached to food, to statements made sometimes only seven seconds ago, this man lives as near to completely in the present as is possible. His is the worst case of amnesia ever recorded.
My mind reels at the consequences and implications of this medical condition. I’d be really interested in everyone’s thoughts on this. What psychological implications are there?

I cant even begin to understand that. For one, its very sad, and I dont know how that woman could live with it.
But to feel as if, everyday you awake your awaking from a long sleep, or a death, would make me want to kill myself. But i would forget that i wanted to and then just keep going.
its madness when i try to put myself in this guys shoes.
i guess im wondering how he was able to say certain things about his condition if he forgets everything eccept his wife and the piano.
also, i wonder if they would be able to teach him things while he played the piano, since his playing taps into memories that cant be touched by the amnesia.
your right shem, my mind is reels the more i try to empathize with this guy.

The first thing forgotten in this story is the freedom. From the past and the future. Never having to let the past weigh down on you. But also it isnt when you cant revel in it.

I’d agree with the freedom part, but it seems that he’s vaguely aware of lacking something, because he talks about being unconscious.
Is there really freedom without memories? How do we know we’re free unless we’ve had something to compare it with?

This disorder is a good representation of today’s societal memory. new technology is created and the old is forgoten by the wayside. celebrities rise in fame and are just as quickly fall. remember that this is a country that feels that 50yrs is a loooooong time ago, another age almost.
this man is living with a blessing and a curse. he cannot remember his mistakes or his successes.

nor could he make any new ones though if he tried.
its more sad than anything else. he doesn’t know what freedom is because he cant remember anything to compare it with. nor does he likely think of the concept of freedom at all, let alone anything else.
the man would be better off dead, and is the closest thing we’re all going to come to in seeing a walking corpse.

Don’t agree Logan.. He does have some memory and it is that memory that makes him occasionally sad and a bit lost; Memory references memory, references memory etc etc.
With absolutely no memory you would I believe be eternally happy; A bit like our Dog Sidney I suppose.
